Summer Term 2019

Our topic is SPACE

This term we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing.

Week beginning 17th June 2019

This week we will learn about astronauts and talk about what it is like to go into space. We will find out who was first to walk on the moon and discover what it's like there. We will learn about the solar system and make papier mache planets. We will dress up and role play in our class spaceship. We will do lots of writing in role as an astronaut.

In Maths, we will build a large class rocket and measure how tall it is compared to us. We will use small 3D shapes from our junk, to design and make our own rockets. We will be recapping addition and subtraction, whilst using a number line. We will count forward and back from any given number between 0-20. We will practise writing numbers in number sentences, using addition and subtraction.

Our phonics groups will continue daily, which involves: games, reading and writing. Some groups have finished learning the Set 2 phonemes (ay, ee, igh, ow, ou, oo, oo, air, ir, or, and oy) and some children will be learning Set 3. We will be writing our weekly 'news' and we will have a topic based writing task. There will be lots of opportunities for reading and writing within our role play areas.

We will be going outside for PE, and will be using a range of equipment to practise our skills ready for Sports Day!

We use the Computing room weekly to add to our topic work and we will be designing rockets and typing a sentence to describe them.

We will continue to embed the school values into our daily life in Chestnut class; growing and learning together.

We have introduced 'Growth Mindset' to the children and we are encouraging them to see how their words can help them to change how they think. Dojo points are linked to Growth Mindset.
