Science- Compost Wormery

Today in Science we created a compost wormery. First of all, we learnt about what soil is made up of- air, water, organic matter and minerals. Then we looked at soil formation and additions, losses, translocations and transformations that occur in the soil. We discussed how worms create compost. After that, we talked about health and safety and went through the instructions. Finally, we made our compost wormeries. First, we had to put a layer of rocks at the bottom. Then we put a layer of soil. We made sure this was moist. Next, we carefully placed worms in. After that, we put some food scraps in. Then we put shredded paper- we made sure this was damp. Then we put black card around the bottle and a lid on top so that it was dark. There were breathing holes too. We made predictions and discussed why we were making the compost, how it was created and observed what had happened so far. We will check our wormeries regularly and see what happens over time.
