Years 3 and 4 took part in a full day of science last week where we were able to look at the thermal properties of different materials and explore how well they conduct heat and insulate.
In year 4 we carried out an experiment to explore the difference between a metal and a plastic spoon in the transfer of heat.
In year 3 we explored the types of materials that different gloves are made out of and discussed what they might be used for, along with the different properties they have.
Next we carried out an experiment to investigate the insulating properties of different materials.
Finally we had an afternoon of activity, investigating the thermal properties of different types of clothing. This involved holding ice cubes for as long as possible both with and without gloves; undertaking physical activity in different types of clothing such as PE kits, ski clothes and football kits, to see what changes might occur to our body temperature. We even emersed ourselves in buckets of water to explore the different properties of different materials and how they help to regulate our temperature in more extreme conditions.
At the end of our exciting day we looked at how our bodies cool down and even tested the theories by having warm squash and ice lollies!
