Playing the 'Paper Bag Game' has given the children an understanding of what life is like for poor trying to earn a living in a crowded shantytown in Kolkata. The children, in their groups, made and sold as many paper bags as they could in 20 minutes. They received one rupee per batch of ten bags. At the end of the task they calculated what they would have earned during a week and from a shopping list they decided what they could buy and if they could survive.
The 'family groups' worked hard and earned about 12 rupees during the 20 minutes.
Ms Holmes, the shopkeeper, bought the bags which would be used to sell rice and spices.
